Curriculum Intent
BTEC Tech Health & Social Care at Co-op Academy Strinesdale allows all students to have ambition within all elements of the course. It allows students to be inspired and successful due to the nature in which the course is constructed, with real-life scenarios. The course allows all students to be determined to succeed, as the method of assessment is very much geared towards the student - whether they prefer the classroom-based coursework element of assessment, or the examination style of assessment. Students will develop their passports to success by using real-life events throughout the course, along with decision making and understanding the life events that they will inevitably face. For those students who wish to study the subject further at college and potentially go on to a service in the industry, it will allow students to make a positive difference in society and find secure employment in today's ever-changing economy. Working in this field can also be one of the most challenging and rewarding careers; but it is also the place where you get the opportunity to make a real difference to people's lives each day.

Component: Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

Content: This learning aim relates to understanding human growth and development across life stages and the factors that affect it. Students study how people grow and develop over the course of their life, from infancy to old age, this includes physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and the different factors, such as lifestyle choices and relationships, that may affect them. Understanding these processes is essential knowledge and understanding for health and social care practitioners.

Component: Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

Content: This learning aim investigates how individuals deal with life events. Students study how an individual's development can be affected by major life events, such as marriage, parenthood or moving house, and how people adapt to these changes, as well as the types and sources of support that can help them. This is the foundational knowledge needed to underpin the students' knowledge to complete the first two assignments and the external exam.

Component: Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

Content: This learning aim continues to investigate how individuals deal with life events, particularly looking at relationship changes, such as parenthood and bereavement. It also looks at coping with changes caused by life events and how individuals adapt to such events. The support offered to individuals is also studied. During this half term, the first assessed assignments are completed.

Component: Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values

Content: This component will give students an understanding of health and social care services and help them to understand the skills, attributes and values that are common across the sector and the barriers that users face. Students will explore a range of healthcare conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes and respiratory conditions and how they can be managed by the individual. Students will study the different healthcare services that are available, such as primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare.

Component: Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values

Content: In term 5, students will explore a range of social care needs and how these can be met by the social care services that are available. Students will also explore barriers that can make it difficult to use these services and suggest how these barriers can be overcome. The learning aim will also allow students to understand the skills and attributes that are required when delivering care, such as problem solving, dealing with difficult situations and having patience and honesty.

Content: This learning aim investigates the skills, attributes and values required to give care. Students will study the various skills when delivering care, such as problem solving, observation and dealing with difficult situations. Students will also study the values in health care, known as the 6 Cs-care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.

Component: Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values

Content: In this learning aim, students will continue to investigate the skills, attributes and values required to give care. Students will explore the personal obstacles that individuals requiring and receiving care may face and how these obstacles may impact on the individual. Students will focus on obstacles such as emotional/psychological, time constraints, availability of resources, unachievable targets, lack of support, particularly from family and other factors specific to the individual, such as a disability and health conditions.

Content: Students will explore how skills, attributes and values benefit individuals when receiving care. Students will study how individuals will be supported to overcome any obstacles, how individuals should receive high quality care and be treated with respect. Also, how the individual should be involved in care decisions, be protected from harm, feel comfortable to raise complaints and have their confidentiality protected and their rights promoted. Component 2 assignments will commence this half term.

Content: In this learning aim, students will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and make recommendations to improve an individual's health and wellbeing. Students will explore how lifestyle choices determine physical health and will also explore the use of the person-centred approach in health and social care settings.

Component: Component 3: Health and Wellbeing

Content: In this learning aim, students will explore recommendations and actions that are aimed at improving health and wellbeing, alongside support available for achieving this. Students will also explore the barriers and obstacles that following recommendations and the unique ways that they may be overcome. To do this, they will need to make links to and build on their prior knowledge and understanding from Component 2, in particular, barriers to accessing services and the personal obstacles individuals may face.
