Multi-Lingual Learners

At Waterhead Academy, our diverse student body includes learners from various corners of the globe. Embracing their linguistic diversity, we refer to them as 'Multilingual Learners' (MLL), highlighting their remarkable ability to communicate in multiple languages rather than focusing on their English proficiency alone. Multilingualism is celebrated and encouraged by all staff, who also have a diverse range of backgrounds. We pride ourselves on our welcoming and supportive environment. While embarking on the language learning journey may feel daunting for our students, we are committed to providing unwavering support and guidance. Our aim is to accelerate their language acquisition while ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.

Upon enrolment, MLL students undergo comprehensive assessments of their English proficiency and engage in detailed discussions about their backgrounds, linguistic abilities, educational history, strengths, and interests. This enables us to tailor a personalized support plan and timetable to ensure their success at our school.

Our curriculum includes 'English Booster' classes at different proficiency levels, complementing mainstream subjects from the English National Curriculum. MLL students benefit from intensive English language instruction, facilitating rapid language acquisition while engaging fully in academic subjects.

Additionally, we offer a nurturing environment through our Globe program, designed for students who require extra support or lack prior educational experience. In this smaller setting, we provide foundational English language instruction alongside exposure to a wide range of subjects available in mainstream education.

At Waterhead, we acknowledge that the majority of EAL students do not have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) requirements. Instead, they possess skills and knowledge comparable to monolingual English-speaking students. Their capability to engage in the full curriculum may exceed their proficiency in English communication.
